The Porch

Why we chose the name.

PORCH is more than a name — this is the picture behind it.

Walk the colonnade

The place

Solomon’s Portico.

The name comes from a place we see in the New Testament — a covered colonnade along the temple complex in Jerusalem.

It became a significant place where Jesus and His followers gathered.

Plan of the Jerusalem temple complex. Solomon’s Portico is the covered colonnade running the full length of the eastern wall.

It ran the length of the eastern wall, along the outer court — the edge of the temple, open to the whole city, overlooking the Kidron Valley and the Mount of Olives.Tap the plan to open it — and walk through the Temple.

Jesus taught there.

John tells us He was walking in Solomon’s Portico when people gathered around Him and asked Him to speak plainly about who He was.

After His resurrection the Apostles kept gathering there — teaching, proclaiming the gospel, and engaging the people around them. Peter preached Jesus to the crowd in that colonnade, and the city was drawn to it.

John 10:23 · Acts 3:11 · Acts 5:12

“And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade.”

Acts 5:12

The picture

A porch faces outward.

There is something else about a porch that fits what we want to be. It is connected to the home, but it faces the street.

We want to be deeply rooted in Christ while always facing toward the people around us.

So on this porch

We gather around Jesus. We welcome people in. We make Him known. We live faithfully in the middle of our city. And we wait with hope for the day our King returns.

PORCH isn’t meant to be a place where we hide from the world. It is where we meet with Christ, grow together as His people, and then go back out into the city with His good news.

That is the picture behind PORCH.

PORCH

“And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade.”

Acts 5:12

Why we chose the name.

PORCH is more than a name — this is the picture behind it.

It comes from a place we see in the New Testament: Solomon's Portico, or Solomon's Porch.

It was a covered colonnade along the temple complex in Jerusalem, and it became a significant place where Jesus and His followers gathered.

Jesus taught there.

After His resurrection, the Apostles continued to gather there, teaching, proclaiming the gospel, and engaging the people around them.

John tells us that Jesus was walking in Solomon's Portico when people gathered around Him and asked Him to speak plainly about who He was . In Acts, Peter and John were there after the healing of the lame man, and Peter proclaimed Jesus to the crowd . Luke tells us that the Apostles regularly gathered there, and that people from the surrounding city were drawn to them .

"And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon's Colonnade."Acts 5:12

A place where we learn His Word, worship, pray, share life together, ask honest questions, encourage one another, and proclaim the good news of Jesus.

But there is something else about a porch that fits what we want to be as a church.

A porch is connected to the home, but it faces outward. We want to be deeply rooted in Christ while always facing toward the people around us.
